Presentation transcript:

Things to think about: Cushions Fabric? Plant - Cotton/linen Animal - Leather/Suede/Silk/Wool Man made- Nylon/Leatherette/PVC Style? How is it going to look? Function? What is it’s intended use? Where is this cushion going to be placed? What age group it’s aimed at? Teenagers/adults/children Decorative techniques? Embroidery/cutback/ Lasered/freehand embroidery Quality control? How well made is the product? Interior trends? Cost ?

Cost: How much is your cushion going to cost? The price of a cushion depends on various things: the fabric cost of production i.e. time spent making the cushion, any equipment needed. decorative details packaging and transport. All of these factors are added together to work out the cost of production. For an approximate guide, companies then multiple this cost by around 100%. i.e (labour)+production+fabric+distribution +storage+ decorative features = £5.50 £5.50x100%=£11

Design on both sides will cost more due to fabric of the same quality as the front is needed on the back and additional construction time for decorative feature. Considerations of costs. When designing and making a cushion. (Labour)+production+fabric+distribution+storage+decorative features = ? Extras cost here ? Labour skills for the decorative feature Look at the cushion opposite and identify any extra costs? Recap The more detailed the construction or decorative features the longer it takes to make, and therefore increase the cost of the final cushion.

Task – working in pairs or a small group. Look at the following cushions and consider the following questions? cushion 1cushion 2cushion 3 Which cushion would be quickest to make and why? Which cushion would be take the longest to make and why? Which of the above cushion would you select to adapt to make it suitable for an innovative hotel in Wales? The cushion needs to be suited to factory manufacture.
