THE FISHING SPANISH FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA Important efforts have been made by Spanish fishing authorities since the accesion to the EU in 1986, in order to adjust the capacity of the fleet to the possibilities of fishing resources. Renewal and modernization criteria, as well as global capacity management measures have been strictly applied.

THE FISHING SPANISH FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA Spanish authorities are currently working in improving the quality of data for the Fishing Fleet Register. For this purpose, a comprehensive review ship by ship is been carried out, since the last three years, in order to regularize the situation of a large number of small boats that had no obligation to do landing declarations. This process has resulted in the definitive exit from the census of many of them.

THE FISHING SPANISH FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA After the publication of Regulation (EC) 2371 / 2002 of the Council and its development by Regulation (EC) 1438 / 2003 of the Commission, an ongoing process started in 2003, that has resulted in a reduction of the fishing fleet capacity and therefore in the overall fishing effort.

THE FISHING SPANISH FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA As noted in the table above, a reduction in the number of ships in the Spanish fishing fleet has been achieved during the last 11 years: ships, representing 37 % of the fleet, so from vessels in 1998 there are now ships registered (31 December 2009).

THE FISHING SPANISH FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA This evolution of the Spanish fleet presents a reduction in terms of tonnage and power, as a result of policies of vessels exits, and the permanent withdrawal aid, so there has been a reduction in tonnage of GT and kW power, since 1998 until now.

THE FISHING SPANISH FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA Thirdly, a key point is to tackle this task with the necessary flexibility in the implementation of adaptation to respect and adjust the situation of each of the affected fleet, in coordination with management plans.
