Symbiotic Relationships
“Good Buddies” Symbiotic Relationships
A relationship between different kinds of organism
 It literally means “together life”. It refers to organisms that live in close approximation; often they cannot live without each other.  Top flap)

Let’s explore some symbiotic relationships …
SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIPS What are the three types of Symbiotic Relationships? By Kim Walker.
OBJECTIVE: Identify Different Interactions among species Interactions.
Warm Up Can you think of examples of relationships where both people/ organisms benefit? Can you think of examples of relationships where one organism.
WANTED: Interactions Amongst Organisms. Mutualism, a relationship between two species in which both species benefit. The ox pecker bird, which is seen.
Symbiotic Relationships
Competition, Predation and Symbiosis
SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIPS
Symbiotic Relationships
* Competition- when organisms of the same or different species attempt to use the same ecological resource Males competing for the ability to mate.
Environmental Interdependence
Community Interactions. Community interactions, such as competition, predation, and various forms of symbiosis, can powerfully affect an ecosystem.
Interactions of Living Things
ORGANISMS CAN INTERACT IN DIFFERENT WAYS ORGANISMS INTERACT IN DIFFERENT WAYS SURVIVAL OF ONE SPECIES MIGHT DEPEND ON ANOTHER SPECIES –SYMBIOSIS = relationship.
OBJECTIVE: Identify Different Interactions among speciesInteractions.
Agenda: 9/11/12 Biology 1. Place bags on lab tables, take out Science Scenarios( except 6 th pd) and wait for instructions so that you can be seated...
Good Buddies Think About It … Why would a symbiotic relationship be beneficial to an organism? Let’s.
Symbiotic Relationships. Interactions Between Organisms What’s the term for when one organism eats another?
Symbiotic Relationships Mutualism- benefits both organisms Commensalism- benefits one and the other is neither helped nor harmed Parasitism- benefits one.
Ecological Interactions
Why do the pairs live together?
Welcome to Biology! 1.Pick up your favorite color of Popsicle Stick Using a Permanent Marker, write your full name on one side On the other side, write.
Survival Relationships
Microorganisms in Ecosystems. Many microorganisms get their food through symbiotic relationships with other living things.
SYMBIOSIS MATCHING ACTIVITY. HERMIT CRAB AND SNAIL SHELL 2 The hermit crab will find an empty snail shell and occupy it. If it outgrows it, it will find.
OBJECTIVE: Identify Different Interactions among speciesInteractions.
Symbiosis, Competition, Predator/Prey. Because, in order to survive, a living organism depends on other living things. Why Do Living Things Interact With.
Ecological Relationships & Symbiosis
 A symbiotic relationship where both organisms benefit from the association.
Instructions for using this template. Remember this is Jeopardy, so where I have written “Answer” this is the prompt the students will see, and where.

Choose The Community Interaction After reading each description and looking at the pictures decide the type of relationship that is being exhibited, and hold up your answer

Name the Community Interaction

Name the Symbiotic Relationship Barnacles create home sites by attaching themselves to whales. This neither harms nor benefits the whales.

Name the Symbiotic Relationship The tapeworm attaches itself to a human’s intestines, extracting nutrients as they pass through the digestive system. The human is not able to absorb the necessary nutrients for survival.

Name the Symbiotic Relationship Honey guide birds alert and direct badgers to bee hives that contain honey. The badger expose the hives and feed on the honey first, then the honey guide bird eats.

Name the Symbiotic Relationship Remora’s attach themselves to a shark’s body. They then travel with the shark and feed on the left-over food scraps from the shark’s meal. There is also the possibility that the remora’s help keep the shark’s skin healthy.

Name the Symbiotic Relationship Ostriches and gazelles feed next to each other. They both watch for predators and alert each other to danger. Since the visual abilities of the two species are different, they can each identify animals the other might not see.

Name the Symbiotic Relationship The stork uses its saw-like bill to cut up the dead animals it eats. As a result, the dead animal carcass is accessible to some bees for food and egg laying.

Name the Symbiotic Relationship Female cowbirds lay eggs in the nests of various songbirds. Neither the mother cowbird or the cowbird hatchling will force the songbird eggs/hatchlings out of the nest.

Name the Symbiotic Relationship Oxpeckers feed on the ticks found on a rhino.

Name the Symbiotic Relationship Silverfish live and hunt with army ants. They share the prey.

Name the Symbiotic Relationship Hermit crabs live in shells made by and then abandoned by snails.

Name the Symbiotic Relationship A flea feeds on the blood of the mouse.

Name the Symbiotic Relationship Yucca flowers are pollinated by the yucca moths. The moths lay their eggs in the flowers where the larvae hatch and eat some of the developing seeds.

Name the Symbiotic Relationship Wrasse fish feed on the parasites found on the black sea bass’s body.

Name the Symbiotic Relationship As bison walk through the grass, insects become active and are seen and eaten by the cowbirds.

Name the Symbiotic Relationship A cuckoo may lay its eggs in a warbler’s nest. The cuckoo’s young will displace the warbler’s young and will be raised by the warbler.

Name the Symbiotic Relationship The clownfish defends the sea anemone from being eaten by the butterfly fish. In return, the sea anemone provides a home to the clown fish.

Name the Symbiotic Relationship Mistletoe extracts water and nutrients from the spruce tree.
