The Science of Living

What is Science Methods to investigate and understand the natural world Deals only with natural world Collect and organize information Look for patterns and connections Propose explanations that can be TESTED

Science is an organized way of using evidence to learn about the natural world.

Science is Investigation Making an observation Asking a question Forming a hypothesis Setting up an experiment Recording and analyzing results Drawing a conclusion

It’s variable Manipulated Variable Cooking time Salt content Mixing method Cooking temperature Responding Variable “doneness” Saltiness Texture Crispiness

Bio- Ology- Ecology Zoology Botany Taxonomy Biochemistry Cytology Microbiology Genetics

Living things: Are made up of cells Reproduce to produce offspring Are based on a universal genetic code Grow and develop Obtain and use materials and energy Respond to their environment Taken as a group- change over time

Made up of cells May be unicellular Uni- one Have only one cell

Made of cells May be multicellular Multi- many Having many cells

Ability to reproduce Necessary for the continuation of the species Asexual- no exchange of genetic material Sexual- exchange of genetic material

Produce New Offspring

Based on Genetic Code DNA code- determines inherited traits of ever organism on Earth

Grows and Develops Growth- increase in the amount of living matter and forming new structures Development- All of the changes that take place during the life of an organism

Energy Consumers find, obtain, and eat their food Producers make their own food Metabolism- all the reactions in a living organsim

Respond to Stimuli If you were in the desert for 2 weeks, what would you want most?

Maintain Internal Balance Homeostasis- maintenance of constant internal environment

Evolution Basic traits inherited from parents do not change GROUPS can change over time May take millions of years Peppered moth
