What is expository writing?

Expository writing is… Writing to give or explain an idea or concept or information There are 5 types (Name them!!); our focus will be Summary/Description What do you think happens within a summary/description essay? What part of speech would we use to add description? So, let’s say we're given this topic: My Favorite Food

What are the parts of an expository essay? How many paragraphs will we have? 5 Intro Body 1 Body 2 Body 3 Conclusion

What are the parts of an expository essay? Introduction: What’s that? This is where you introduce your readers to your topic. What goes in the introduction? First: Provide a “HOOK” (like catching a fish) that ties in with the topic: My Favorite Food Example. (Jot it down) Food is such a delightful thing! It can be found everywhere in the world! Because there’s such an abundance of different types of foods, it makes it hard to choose a favorite. However, I have narrowed it down to one. SO WHAT COMES AFTER THE HOOK?

Thesis Statement The main idea of your paper; it is what your entire writing should be focused around. It’s not fancy. It’s just your objective for writing. Example thesis: My favorite food is peanut butter and jelly. So let’s add it after the hook: (add the thesis to your notes) Food is such a delightful thing! It can be found everywhere in the world! Because there’s such an abundance of different types of foods, it makes it hard to choose a favorite. However, I have narrowed it down to one. My favorite food is peanut butter and jelly.

Next, introduce the three subtopics to support your thesis. There has to be a reason for why this person chose peanut butter and jelly as their favorite food. You have to provide 3 discussable reasons. These reasons are called subtopics Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches are inexpensive. Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches are easy to make. 3. Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches are delicious. Challenge: Create a sentence that includes all of these subtopics and add it behind the thesis statement. It will look like…

So let’s add the reasons… Food is such a delightful thing! It can be found everywhere in the world! Because there’s such an abundance of different types of foods, it makes it hard to choose a favorite. However, I have narrowed it down to one. My favorite food is peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches are inexpensive, easy to make, and are delicious.

What comes next? 3 Body Paragraphs What goes in these 3 paragraphs? 8-10 sentences: Sentences that supports the subtopic (reasons) being discussed and include 2 examples as evidence to support your reasons. Afterwards, close it out with a concluding statement. Body 1 will discuss subtopic 1. Body 2 will discuss subtopic 2 and Body 3 will discuss subtopic 3. So, what do I need to start? Each body paragraph will be introduced with a topic sentence. Your topic sentence is just the sentence that introduces the subtopic for that particular body paragraph. Body. 1. Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches are inexpensive. Body. 2. Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches are easy to make. Body. 3. Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches are delicious.

Example Body 1: Remember the subtopics: 1 Example Body 1: Remember the subtopics: 1.Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches are inexpensive. 2. Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches are easy to make. 3. Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches are delicious. -Evidence - Topic Sentence Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches are very inexpensive. These scrumptious sandwiches require only 3 main ingredients: bread, jelly, and peanut butter. These ingredients can be found in your neighborhood grocery store for under $5. Additionally, after purchase, these ingredients tend to have a very long shelf life which helps cut down grocery shopping which in turns helps save money. For example, my family usually doesn’t eat jelly or peanut butter on a regular basis, and so these ingredients remain in the house for days. Because they are not being purchased on a daily basis, it cuts down on the expensiveness of the ingredients . Therefore, this lovely meal is very inexpensive. Concluding statement

Your Turn!! Using your notes, formulate Body 2 and 3. Use the subtopics introduced in the introductory paragraph. Be sure to include: -topic sentence Key details 2 examples A concluding statement

The conclusion summarizes your entire essay. So, now that you have PROVEN with EVIDENCE why PB& J are your favorite.. Now what? CONCLUSION-what’s that? In the conclusion you simple restate what you wrote in the introduction. Huh? The introduction introduced your reader to the topic. It hooked them in, gave the stance (main idea or thesis) and the 3 subtopics. The conclusion summarizes your entire essay. -restate the thesis using different words, restate the 3 subtopics, and close out with a clincher

Conclusion DO NOT INTRODUCE NEW IDEAS IN THE CONCLUSION DO NOT INTRODUCE NEW SUBTOPICS (REASONS) WITHIN THE CONCLUSION A conclusion consists of at least 5-8 sentences.

Conclusion In conclusion, Peanut Butter and Jelly is at the top of my list as a favorite food. With all of the food choices in the world, no other food has been able to compare! It’s very rare to find a favorite food that is inexpensive, easy to make, and delicious. However, I found a food that meets all of the above. Can you say the same about your favorite food?
