SOUND DESIGN The total sonic experience

* Diegetic Sound  The sounds in a movie that the characters CAN hear  Examples: Dialogue, Natural Sounds

*Non-Diegetic Sound  The sounds in a movie that the audience hears, but the characters DO NOT  Example: The score, soundtrack, narrator  **Used to set the mood and evoke emotion

Spotting  The process when the director consults with the composer and the picture and sound editors to determine where music and effects will be added.  Happens during post production

*Overlapping Dialogue  Mixing characters’ speech simultaneously  Many times the background sound is turned down, so the viewer can concentrate on the dialogue between the two main characters.  Used to achieve realism or to distract the audience (causes the audience to have to listen and pay closer attention)

**Score  The music written for a movie or play

Soundtrack  The music and dialogue from a film available on a commercial recording.

Examples from Inception (Christopher Nolan)  (diegetic sound)  feature=related (non-diegetic) feature=related
