Oh Where Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE

latitude (parallels)- parallel lines on a map that run east to west and measure distances north and south of the equator (0° latitude). Each of these lines is numbered in degrees either north or south of the equator. The poles are 90°. equator- 0° latitude, divides earth into equal north south halves

longitude (meridian)- lines on a map that run north to south (from pole to pole) and measures distances east and west of the prime meridian (0° longitude). These lines are not parallel and like a circle, divide the earth into 360°. Prime Meridian- 0° longitude, runs through Greenwich, England

Youtube video (3:14) Youtube video

latitude and longitude are measured in degrees, minutes and seconds 60 seconds = 1 minute, 60 minutes = 1 degree Example 45° 14’ 32”

Every degree of latitude is 69 miles Every degree of longitude varies from 69 miles at the equator to 0 miles at the poles.
