Engineering Design Process TED 105

Technology Literacy What does it mean to be “technology literate”? Means you are able to use, manage, and evaluate technology in your life.

Technology defined What does “technology” mean? The process of design that is solving problems with criteria and constraints. The product, system, or environment that results from the design The new understanding of knowledge gained through the design and production of a product.

A Technology dependent society? What are the needs of a technology dependent society? Technology professionals who can understand design processes and create new products. Technology experts who can help consumers use and manage those products. Citizens who can make intelligent technology choices. Jeffersonian Democracy

Examples of items designed for our world. Design criteria

Product Life Cycle Five stages of the life of a product Design Phase Manufacturing Phase Marketing Phase User Phase Disposal Phase

Research Time Research one of the following technology design failures: The Space Shuttle Challenger Explosion SUV Roll Over Boston Big Dig Tunnel Collapse Tacoma Narrow Bridge Collapse

Reflection time Based upon your design failure selection, write a brief summary of the failure and answer the following questions: What factors contributed to the failure? Was there unethical behavior exhibited by the professionals? What principles were violated (Scientific or technological)? How can society prevent a similar failure from occurring?
