The Canadian Citizenship Act WHAT: 1946, is an Act of the Parliament of Canada which separated Canadian citizenship from British nationality. BEFORE: The status of "Canadian citizen" was originally created under the Immigration Act, 1910, to designate those British subjects who were born, naturalized or domiciled in Canada. All other British subjects required permission to land. AFTER: Canadian citizenship was created by the Canadian Citizenship Act, 1946, which came into effect on 1 January WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: Canadian citizenship became separate from British nationality.

Before this you were born a British citizen * 1977: citizenship to ALL people born in Canada or if either parent is Canadian. naturalization People who are not citizens may become so by following the legal process called naturalization

To become a Canadian citizen you must:  be 18 years or older  be a permanent resident of Canada  must have come to Canada legally.  have lived in Canada for 3 of the 4 years prior to applying for citizenship.  be able to speak French or English.  know Canada’s history and geography.  understand the system of government as well as the rights and responsibilities of a Canadian citizen.

To apply for citizenship for a child under 18: you must be the child’s parent, adoptive parent or legal guardian, the child must be a permanent resident, and one parent must be a Canadian citizen or apply to become a citizen at the same time (this also applies to adoptive parents).

You are not eligible to become a Canadian citizen if:  you are in prison, on parole or probation (now or during the last 4 years  you were ordered by the Canadian government to leave Canada.  you are being investigated for a crime.  your citizenship was taken away during the past 5 years.

Honorary Citizenship  Sometimes a country will see somebody who they consider to be very admirable. That quality can qualify somebody for Honorary Citizenship. The person chosen must come from another country, cannot already hold citizenship and is always welcome in the country where he / she is named citizen.
