Jeopardy Feeding & Management of the Cow-Calf Herd Unit 15 Animal Science 1

FeedingCows, Dry Cows & Calves Breeding and Calving BullsBranding and Marking

The feeding program of the cow-calf herd is primarily based on this.

What is roughage? Main Screen

Doing this will help increase the carrying capacity of a pasture.

What is rotational grazing? Main Screen

When calves have above average growth potential doing this is a good mananagment practice.

What is creep feeding? Main Screen

Feeding Calves for days before selling them.

What is backgrounding? Main Screen

Involves certifying that a schedule of good management practices was followed.

What is preconditioning? Main Screen

Should be fed enough to keep them in good flesh throughout the winter.

What are dry pregnant mature cows? Main Screen

Can meet their nutrient requirements on high-quality legume pastures.

What are lactating cows? Main Screen

Dry pregnant cows should never be self fed this protein supplement.

What is urea? Main Screen

Dry pregnant cows will not overeat protein if they are not in this condition.

What is hungry or thirsty? Main Screen

Should be bred when they weigh pounds depending on breed.

What are replacement heifers? Main Screen

This breeding method takes more time and supervision of the herd.

What is artificial insemination? Main Screen

Calving during this time of year requires less housing, feed and labor.

What is spring? Main Screen

30-40 percent of the heifers in the herd should be saved each year for this purpose.

What are replacement heifers? Main Screen

This is caused by a selenium deficiency in the diet.

What is White Muscle disease? Main Screen

40-60 days.

What the length of the calving period? Main Screen

15-18 months of age

What is the age that well grown bulls may be used for breeding? Main Screen

40-60 days.

What are the number of days bulls should be run with cows? Main Screen

Should gain pounds/day.

What are yearling bulls? Main Screen

6-8 months of age.

What is the approximate age to wean bulls? Main Screen

This is done because steers gain faster than bulls.

What is castration? Main Screen

This type of marking is often done in purebred herds.

What is ear tatooing? Main Screen

Common practice in larger herds and required by law in Western South Dakota.

What is branding? Main Screen

Can be accomplished with several methods including burning, caustic sticks, paste and spoons.

What is dehorning? Main Screen

Most common form of identification for cattle.

What are ear tags? Main Screen

Should be done when the calf is young because there is less shock.

What is dehorning? Main Screen
