McKinley was born in Niles, Ohio in 1843

He was the seventh child born to William and Nancy McKinley

He attended Alleghany College in Pennsylvania but had to drop out due to illness.

When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted as a private in the 23 rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry

McKinley was promoted to 1 st Lieutenant in February 1864 and for his services at Winchester, he was promoted Captain on July 25, 1864.

After the war, McKinley became governor of Ohio in 1892.

He ran for President as a Republican in 1896 and was elected on March

He was the first president to run a "front porch" campaign-- a campaign limited in travel.

His first lady was Ida McKinley, his wife.
