Presentation transcript:

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF? A. YES B. NO

What happens to your body in a stressful situation of survival? A. Palms sweat B. Heart races C. Panic D. Hands tremble

Fact:  In this day and age, it seems that more and more people are being assaulted and sexually assaulted when they are in a vulnerable situation.

What is considered a vulnerable situation? A. Walking to your car at night after work B. Friends walking or running at the park C. Staying home at night D. Going to the restroom in a stadium by yourself

What are some ways to handle yourself if you feel someone attacking you? A. Use mace B. Confront the stalker C. Start screaming D. Try to hide

If you feel that someone is stalking you in the street:  Don't be afraid to simply yell 'BACK OFF' at the top of your voice.  Even if they are innocent, it is better to be safe than sorry  ( Don't be afraid to draw attention to yourself - it may save you from getting beaten up/raped.)

If you must walk in the street, what is the best location to walk? A. With traffic B. Against traffic Which way do I walk?

Hint:  When walking home, walk so that you are facing the traffic. It is easy for a potential rapist to pull over behind you and drag you into his/her car.

Wearing your hair in a certain way makes you vulnerable? A. True B. False  Make sure that if you are walking home alone at night, you either have your hair up in a bun or are wearing it out. Women can easily be manipulated by their hair, and many people would target women with their hair in a plait or a pony-tail, and control them by that.

Always check in and under your parked vehicle before entering! A. True B. False

Personal Safety tips  Avoid taking short-cuts through dark alley-ways, especially when it is approaching night-time.  If something was to happen, there is a smaller chance that someone might hear you. It is better to go the long way around than to risk getting mugged on a desolate side street.

More Safety tips:  Appear confident.  A potential attacker would rather assault someone who is looking at the ground, and is looking unsure. You will be less likely to be attacked if you maintain a good posture, and look directly ahead of you.

The best technique of self- defense is to Fight?  True  False

If someone is threatening you with a gun, take your chances, and run. A. True B. False  Run in zig zags, not in a straight line. It is harder to hit a moving target.

What are the best methods of Self Defense?  Curious?  Please stay tuned to your next Physical Education Class to find out!

 One of the most effective ways to fight back is to use a palm heel strike. Your palm heel is the hard bone between your palm and your wrist. You can find it by pressing you palm hard on a flat surface: the area that turns white is the palm heel. Execute the palm heel strike by keeping your fingers back and thrusting your palm heel forward.

 Don't be afraid to fight back. Good places to aim for are the temple and the groin. Don't make the moves fancy, and throw complex sequences - self defense is not pretty. Do whatever is practical and effective
