Romeo and Juliet This play was about two families (Montagues and Capulets) in war basically. The two children of both families fall in love at a party. They both died at the end, so they can be together without all the violence.

Marty This story is about a butcher named Marty. He’s the only one in his family who has not gotten married. Everyone in town is pressuring him to find love. When he finally does, his mother(whom he lives with) does not like her. The story ends with Marty still left unmarried.

Drama Drama- stories told mainly through dialogue and the actions of the characters Drama is usually written to be performed in front of an audience. Drama can be found in movies, soap operas, and sitcoms. West side story is a perfect example of drama.

West Side Story This story is almost like Romeo and Juliet. Two gangs (Jets and Sharks) fighting over territory. One teen from each of the groups (Maria and Tony) fall in love with the other. It was love at first sight. A few differences between the two are the time periods, and Maria doesn’t kill herself.

Foil Character Foil Character- the character who is the exact opposite of the main character Foil characters in a story help make the characteristics and personality of the protagonist stand out. In the play Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio is the foil to Benvolio. For example, Mercutio is violent, while Benvolio is not.

Shakespeare’s Plot Tragedy He started to write tragic plots to give the story artistic purpose Shakespeare made his tragic heroes like regular people, but with just one fault usually leading to the characters downfall.

Soliloquies Soliloquy- a dramatic monologue that represents a series of unspoken reflections; the act of talking to oneself In drama, soliloquies were used for the actors to express their thoughts or feelings aloud while onstage alone or the other actors quiet. Romeo used many soliloquies in Romeo and Juliet.

Monologue Monologue- a long speech by one person; a dramatic soliloquy Shakespeare tries to put at least one monologue in each of his plays.

Asides Aside- a little section of a play, story, movie, ect. meant for the audience to hear but the cast not to hear. The cast hears it but they act as if they don’t. It’s almost as if the character is speaking to the audience.

Prologues Prologue- an introduction to an act, event, or period; sometimes can be recited as a poem. Romeo and Juliet has a few acts starting with prologues. It used to tell the reader what is to happen in the section they are about to read. In the play Marty, the prologue is used to tell stage directions, where the camera should sit, and who will be in the next section of the play.

Chorus Chorus- a part of the play that is performed by either one person or a group of people. In Romeo and Juliet, the chorus was used to give clues on how the story should be interpreted.

3 types of Irony The three types of irony are verbal, dramatic, and situational Verbal- contrast between what is said and what is meant. Ex: “Real funny”, really means it’s not funny at all Dramatic- contrast between what the character thinks to be true and what the reading knows is true. Ex: When the reader knows the the killers hiding on the floor, but the story character doesn’t. Situational- contrast between what happened and what was meant to happen. Ex: playing a prank on someone but it all backfired on you.

Stage Directions Stage directions are used to direct the character what to do and where to go onstage. Its most commonly written into the play or movie script. Not only does it direct where to go, it also tells the character how to feel and show what kind of emotions to pursue during acting.

Blank Verse Blank verse- an unrhymed iambic pentameter Iambic Pentameter- an unrhymed verse with 5 accents

Allusion Allusion- a passing or casual reference Juliet makes an allusion about a Phaeton myth in the play Romeo and Juliet.

Oxymoron Oxymoron- a figure of speech where a set of words contrast each other Ex: Pretty Ugly Girl, Cruel Kindness Pretty and ugly are opposites but they are both used to describe how ugly the girl is Cruel kindness are opposites but the both are used to describe a state of feeling
