Presentation transcript:

AP Language November 7-10 I can demonstrate my comprehension of increasingly difficult texts by answering literal and interpretive questions. I can imitate a classical argumentative structure in writing a satirical piece. I can analyze a writer’s syntax and its effect on meaning.

Using Quotation Marks Use quotation marks to enclose a direct quotation—a person’s exact words. Commas and periods always come inside the quotation marks; question marks and exclamation points are inside the marks if the quotation itself is a question or exclamation. Colons and semicolons are placed outside the closing quotation marks. By the way, he said, we decided to go to the play. Gina Berriault uses several types of figurative language in her short story The Stone Boy simile metaphor and personification. In her essay On the Mall Joan Didion describes shopping malls as toy gardens in which no one lives (7). Did Langston Hughes write the line My soul has grown deep like the rivers ? In his speech to the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1765 Patrick Henry said if this be treason, make the most of it. Aaron said that, “He can type seventy-five words per minute.”
