Overview  Introduction  Problem and Solution  Practical Constraints  Refinements/Subsystems  Test Plan  Testing  Packaging  Questions and Answers

Introduction Controller (Hardware/Software) Lights (Move, Change Colors) What is a Lighting System? AmateursProfessionals Hardware Controller Software Controller Stationary Lights Automated Lights

Introduction Computer Software USB to DMX Interface Intelligent Lighting Fixture *NOTE -- DMX-512 Protocol is the industry standard communication for intelligent lighting systems

Problem Current Professional Lighting Systems Positives :  Create dynamic, multicolored shows  Lights move very quickly  User can program entire shows Negatives :  Very expensive (software and light fixtures)  Consume a lot of power  Use incandescent bulbs which are fragile

Solution Pike Light Positives :  Creates dynamic, multicolored shows  Lights move quickly  User can program entire shows  Uses durable LEDs  Requires much less power  Very competitive costs

TypeNameDescription EconomicCostEach fixture must manufacture under $ ManufacturabilityCompatibilityThis product must be made with industry- standard connectors. LED Intelligent Lighting System technical design constraints, adapted from [1] Practical Constraints

Subsystem Division The LED Intelligent is divided into four major subsystems: Communication – Jeff and Ryan LED System – Jeff and Matt Motor System – Matt and Jeremy Power Supply – Jeremy and Ryan

Refinements Implement a home-position sensor for each motor Implement an internal power supply Create a printed circuit board (PCB) Improve packaging appeal

LED Intelligent Lighting System technical design constraints, adapted from [1] Test Plan CategoryConstraintTest Plan Color VariationCreate 16+ Million ColorsVisual Inspection Range of MotionPan 360° and Tilt 180°Protractor/Grid Current DrawUse < 7.5 Amps at 120 VACAmmeter CommunicationCommunicate DMX-512 ProtocolOscilloscope/Software Speed Must Pan 360° within 4 Seconds and Tilt 180° within 3 Seconds Stopwatch

Testing – Color Variation NameDescription Color VariationThe product must create 16+ million colors. Visual Verification Different Color emitted by LED Verify that the color emitted by LED matches those created by the software Different current levels per DMX value Measure the current of each channel in equal increments

Testing – Range of Motion NameDescription Range of MotionThe light fixture must be able to pan 360° and tilt 180°. Visual Inspection Verify that the fixture rotates in correct direction Verify correct starting position Check random points during rotations for accuracy using a grid and protractor At DMX value of 128 the angle should be 180 degrees from the home position At DMX value of 64 the angle should be 90 degrees from the home position

Testing – Current Draw NameDescription Current DrawThe light must use less than 7.5 amps at 110/120 volts. Use ammeter to confirm that the current draw for the light fixture meets the design constraint shown above. Picture Courtesy of:

Testing – Communication NameDescription CommunicationThe product must communicate using the DMX-512 protocol. Check the communication to confirm that the correct DMX value is being translated by: Oscilloscope Hyperterminal LEDs

Testing – Speed NameDescription SpeedMust Pan 360° within 4 Seconds and Tilt 180° within 3 Seconds Use stopwatch to confirm that the light fixture’s speed meets the design constraint shown above.
