Miss Robinson 5 th Grade Use the Post-It Note on your child’s desk to tell me what you would like to see from your child’s 5 th grade teacher. Back to School Night

School Reminders Students will be counted as tardy if they are not in class at the 8:15 bell. All absences should be cleared with the office ASAP. The office will not interrupt classroom instruction. Any necessary arrangements should be made with your child ahead of time. If you have not already done so, you need to prepare an emergency pack for your child ASAP (you can also buy this from PTO.

All About Me  My background  Bachelors in Psychology with a Spanish minor (University of Puget Sound, Seattle, WA.).  Teaching credential and masters in education, Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, Ca).  My experience  Seventh year at East Heritage  Eighth year teaching (I have taught 4 th and 3 rd grade in previous years).

Welcome to Fifth Grade!  I will discuss some of the general expectations in the fifth grade.  If you have any questions please hold them until the end of the presentation.

State Standards & Physical Education  All classroom instruction is based on the California Content Standards. You can find a detailed list of these standards at  In addition to state tests in math, language arts, and science, 5 th graders are tested in their overall physical health. The statewide P.E. tests includes the following:  Push ups  Sit ups  Arm stretches  Trunk lifts  The mile

How Does Running the Mile Work?  Every Friday (weather permitting) 5 th graders are required to run a mile.  For the school year, the participation portion of the P.E. grade will be based on the amount of time it takes them to complete the mile.

How Does Running the Mile Work?  During the 1 st and 2 nd trimesters here is how mile times will be graded:  Less than 12 mins. = 10  14:59 – 12:00 = 9.5  16:59 – 15:00 = 8.5  19:59 – 17:00 = 7.5  More than 20 mins. = 6

How Does Running the Mile Work?  During the 3 rd trimester, after students have had two trimesters to condition themselves, the grading scale changes:  0:00 – 8:00 mins. = 10  8:01 – 10:00 = 8  10:01 – 12:00 7  12:01 – 14:00 6  More than 14 mins. = 5

How Will the State Test P.E.  Depending on their overall height and weight, each student will have a different time frame to complete the mile and still be considered physically healthy overall.  Typically, the more a child weighs in relation to their height, the less time they will have to complete the mile in order to be considered a healthy weight.

Tips For Helping Your Child Succeed in P.E.  Encourage them to stay physically active.  Encourage a proper diet.  Make sure they wear comfortable clothes and shoes on Fridays. They can bring a change of clothes if they would like.  Deodorant

Discipline Policy  My discipline policy is based on the 5 citizenship categories that students are graded on in their report cards. On a weekly basis a behavior report will be sent home with students that will show if they are struggling in any of the following areas:  Controls Talking  Uses Time Productively  Respects Others  Follows Rules or directions  Completes Homework If your child pulled 3 tickets or more during the previous week, they will miss “Fun Friday.”

Homework Policy  Students will receive a weekly homework packet that will outline the homework assignments for each night. Students should be able to complete their nightly homework assignment within an hour with minimal to no help.  Completed homework packets are due on Fridays. Packets need to be initialed nightly. When students turn their packets in on Fridays, they must be signed by a parent. If not your child will miss “Fun Friday.”  On a nightly basis students will be assigned math homework. Students (and parents )are encouraged to use their math journal and textbook to help them with their nightly homework.  As a part of teaching 5 th graders responsibility, I will not make phone calls home if a student forgets their homework.

We’re Online!!  My classroom website is a HUGE resource for parents to use in order to keep up with the day to day activities in our classroom. I post daily homework assignments, spelling and vocabulary lists, important reminders, etc. on my webpage.  Log on at: inson/. SIGN UP FOR BREAKING NEWS TEXT MESSAGES ! inson/

Parent Involvement & Communication  Keeping the lines of communication open between parents and teachers is always valued. If you feel as though you would like to share information about your student that would be of benefit please feel free to share.  The best way to stay informed is to CHECK YOUR DAILY. I use this as my primary source of contact for general classroom information.  Classroom volunteers are always welcomed and there are many ways that you can volunteer your time. Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering.  Ordering books through Scholastic is a great way to support our classroom.

Let’s Have a Great Year!
