Presentation transcript:

 Guru Nanak set up three important customs.  Sewa- voluntary work  Langar – a community meal.  Sangat – social gathering  These customs help strengthen the Sikh community and help Sikhs keep to the teachings of Guru Nanak

 This is service to others.  It is an important part of Sikh life.  Sewa are selfless acts.  Usually Sikhs perform sewa by cleaning the gurdwara (Sikh temple) or helping those less fortunate.  Giving money is also another form of sewa, the tenth guru, Guru Gobind Singh, said that Sikh’s should give one tenth of their earnings to the poor.  Guru Nanak also said that you could also perform sewa by telling people about the goodness of God. This did not mean convincing them to be Sikhs.

 This is an open kitchen.  It was set up by the third Guru, Guru Amar Das who was inspired by Guru Nanaks teaching that everyone could eat together equally.  Men and women help prepare vegetarian food and then everyone sits on the floor and eats with each other.  There is a reason people eat sitting on the floor can you think of why?

 This is a Sikh gathering.  This is where Sikhs meet to express their spirituality.  This helps them keep a sense of community.  It also helps them to keep their faith.

 Anyone can join in these Sikh customs no matter what race, colour, gender or background.
