The Depression Worsens Many families became homeless (couldn’t pay rent or mortgage.) Homeless put up shacks on public lands, called shantytowns, referred to as Hoovervilles. Many homeless began wandering the country (hobos), hitchhiking or “riding the rails” in search of work.
The Dust Bowl Farmers’ struggles in 1920’s left many acres of land uncultivated. That combined with drought and high winds created an environment with huge dust storms. Clouds of dust and dirt could raise 8,000 feet up and move up to 100 mph. Dust buried crops and livestock and forced farmers to leave farms and homes.
