Persuasion in Poetry & Speeches

Thesis Revision Activity As you watch the video, think about what is Allie’s dilemma? What does she need to do that she isn’t doing?

What makes a good thesis? In the video, Allie is unable to make a choice or pick a side. In persuasive essays, thesis statements need to do the following: State the stance (or pick a side) Give clear reasons for that stance With a partner, each of you will read your thesis from your persuasive draft out loud. While you’re listening, make note of the following: Does it take a side? Are there clear reasons?

Thesis Revision Once you get feedback from your partner, re-write your thesis. Make sure you have a clear stance and reasons. Then proofread it for grammar and spelling. When you are finished, turn it in to the teacher.

Let’s watch the Notebook again… This time… As you watch the video, think about what techniques Noah is using to convince Allie to go out with him? How does he do it?

So, what type of persuasion is Noah using? Pair Share with your partner. Let’s discuss as a class…

How do author’s persuade? When an author appeals to a reader’s emotions, this is the persuasive technique called pathos. In the videos you watched today, Noah is trying to persuade Allie to choose him using an impassioned speech and fear. He is using pathos. Authors use persuasive techniques in their writing no matter what genre they are writing in. Today, we will compare and contrast how persuasion is used in both poetry & nonfiction.

For this process we’ll read through the piece twice. On the first reading, mark your poem like this: * Use a star for significant information, devices, and strategies you notice. ! Use an exclamation point to indicate what you feel strongly about. ? Use a question mark next for parts that are confusing or next to any information that you’d like to explore further. “Poem for the Young White Man…” by Lorna Dee Cervantes

Persuasive Techniques in Poetry Mark the following during the second reading of the poem. For the details, look for pathos in the poem. F Figurative Language I Imagery D Details. Find details that use pathos (appeal to the reader’s emotions)

For this process we’ll read through the piece twice. On the first reading, mark your article like this: * Use a star for significant information, devices, and strategies you notice. ! Persuasive Techniques in Non-Fiction: “Micro Aggression is Hyper Sensitive Nitpicking” by Mike Rosen
