Presentation Techniques

Why it is important? 1. Essential business skill 2. Opportunity to communicate ideas 3. Persuade people 4. Motivate people

What is the first thing you do when told you have to give a presentation?

What makes a good presentation ? Planning Practice Performance

First thing to do is planning What do you want to achieve? Why is it important? How are you going to present it? How will you make them remember it?

Planning OBJECTIVE MESSAGE METHOD CONCLUSION

Planning-Message Your message MUST deliver the objective. The message must be relevant. The message must motivate. The message must tell them clearly what action you want them to take.

Planning-Method Presentation style Content Audio/Visual aids Know your audience who is in your audience? what do they expect from your presentation? what do they need from your presentation? what do they know already? what are their objectives/interests?

Planning-Method Check logistics how much time do you have? when are you speaking? what size is the room/hall what visual aids will be available? what visual aids do you need?

Planning-Method Structure - the opening –your best chance to make a positive impact the middle –present the information in an interesting and informative way - appropriate to the audience the close –summarize key points

Planning-Conclusion This could be you last chance Recap key points

What makes a good presentation? channels of information how you look how you sound overcoming nerves using visual aids

Channel of information % of meaning is conveyed through how you look and sound rather than what you say! delivering the message well is as important as the message body language, dress, sound and gestures all affect the way your words are received

How you look-facial expressions relax you face - it shows how you’re feeling smile do a facial warm up let your expression be your armor

How you sound? the best speed for spoken delivery is about 120 words per minute avoid gabbling avoid speaking too slowly volume - make sure you can be heard and use it purposefully use expression and tone be natural eliminate filler phrases

Overcoming nerves dry mouth butterflies - wildly thumping heart tight throat trembling hands mannerisms amnesia!

Overcoming Amnesia make notes pause to gather your thoughts rehearse fainting at this point is not a good idea!

Mannerisms to avoid jangling coins or keys fiddling with earrings, hair, tie, pen……..etc tapping finger nails, pen, pencil, feet scratching - anything! biting your nails. fingers, pens....

Summary plan and practice your presentation well dress appropriately be aware of your body language make good eye contact eliminate filler phrases use tone, volume and expression RELAX AND ENJOY!
