Optimizing Power and Data Center Resources Jim Sweeney Enterprise Solutions Consultant, GTSI

Going Green Lots of Good Reasons:  In the next decade, growth in server shipments will be 6x and 69x for storage. IBM / Consultant studies  Per square foot, annual data center energy costs are 10 to 30 times more than those of a typical office building. William Tschudi, March 2006  Data centers have doubled their energy use in the past five years. Koomey, February 2007  US commercial electrical costs increased by 10 percent from EPA Monthly Forecast, 2007  Energy costs for servers will match acquisition costs by IDC 2007

DATA CENTER What Percentage of Energy Actually Does Productive Work? 100% 30% 16% Energy Source Generation & Distribution Cooling Power Supplies, UPS Servers Silicon Mission Critical Apps 1%.003%

Where Does Power Go? IT Equipment = 30% Power:  PDU: 5%  UPS: 18%  Switchgear: 1%  Lighting: 1% Cooling:  Chiller: 33%  Humidifier: 3%  CRAC: 9%

Green is More Than Power Usage Energy-Efficient Systems: Cooling, UPS, power supplies, servers, and non-IT equipment Asset Procurement: Equipment is selected considering full lifecycle environmental impact, from technology providers with appropriate environmental policies and controls Building Construction: The physical building, its fixtures and fittings are designed and selected to be energy efficient and to make use of relatively low impact materials and construction techniques (LEED certification) Energy-Efficient Operations: The systems are monitored and operated to maximize energy efficiency Energy Source: Appropriate use of renewable or locally generated energy; solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, fuel cell, etc. Support Services: Selected and managed to minimize the environmental footprint Waste Management: Waste products and emissions are reduced, recycled, or reused

Where to Reduce Consumption Right-size Power / Cooling equipment 30% Using a modular, scalable power and cooling architecture Some DC’s are over provisioned by 205% Not always possible Virtualize Servers 40% 8 – 10 to 1 is typical consolidation ratio (Can be as high as 30 to 1) New power saving mode creates even more opportunity for savings (In addition to all the other benefits) Radical move for some organizations. May requires major IT process changes American Power Conversion Corporation (APC) white paper, Implementing Energy Efficient Data Centers, #114, by Neil Rasmussen, 2006.

7 Server Virtualization

Server Consolidation

ESX Server Hot Migration with VMotion ® Technology

ESX Server 1 (HP) ESX Server 2 (IBM) ESX Server 3 (Dell) Apache SAP Exch Server Citrix DNS/DHCPOracle SQL Server VMotion ® Enables High Utilization Across the Data Center via Continuous Workload Consolidation

ESX Server 1 (HP) ESX Server 2 (IBM) ESX Server 3 (Dell) Apache SAP Exch Server Citrix DNS/DHCPOracle SQL Server VMotion Enables High Utilization Across the Data Center via Continuous Workload Consolidation

Where to Reduce Consumption More Efficient Air Conditioner Architecture 15% Row-oriented cooling has higher efficiency for high density computing Shorter air paths require less fan power CRAC supply and return temperatures are higher, increasing efficiency, and capacity Benefits are not limited to high density designs Tough to implement in existing datacenter Economizer Modes of Air Conditioners 15% Many air conditioners offer economizer options Offers substantial energy savings, depending on geographic location Some data centers have air conditioners with economizer modes, but economizer operation is disabled For new designs Difficult to retrofit More Efficient Floor Layout 12% Floor layout has a large effect on the efficiency of the air conditioning system Involves hot-aisle / cold-aisle arrangement with suitable air conditioner locations For new designs and expansions Difficult to retrofit More Efficient Power Equipment 10% New best-in-class UPS systems have 70% less losses than legacy UPS at typical loads Light load efficiency is the key parameter, NOT the full load efficiency Don’t forget that UPS losses must be cooled, doubling their costs For new designs or retrofits American Power Conversion Corporation (APC) white paper, Implementing Energy Efficient Data Centers, #114, by Neil Rasmussen, 2006.

Summary Virtualization has the potential to yield the greatest impact in the data center. While some things can only be implemented with new buildings, everyone can do SOMETHING to move towards green. Green is not a one time event. Good ideas are in the white paper. Continuous monitoring and improvement is the norm!
