Idaho Near Space Engineering – Idaho RISE – Brandy Holmes Project Manager David Atkinson Electrical &Computer Engineering Idaho RISE Faculty Coordinator 27 August 2008

What is RISE / VAST?  Research Involving Student Engineers and Educators  Vandal Atmospheric Science Team  Multidisciplinary program available to students from departments in the College of Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Education, and all other disciplines.  Students design, build, test and fly science payloads up to 100,000 ft and beyond 2

27 August UI Idaho RISE RISE Mission  Introduce Idaho students to space design engineering and provide the opportunity to participate in aerospace-related design experiences, including the design, development, testing, and operation of space-flight hardware, especially systems that will operate in extreme environments;  Provide Idaho Students with experience in project management and working as a member of design teams;  Prepare students for and contribute to the development of an experienced and technologically capable aerospace workforce through the promotion of science, math, engineering education and necessary skill required for engineers and scientists to enter the 21st century workforce.

27 August UI Idaho RISE Facts  Commercial airlines cruise between 30,000-40,000 ft (9-12 km)  International Space Station orbits at 1,150,000 ft (350 km)  Balloons can reach above 100,000 ft (30 km):  Pressure: 1% of sea level (near vacuum)  Temperature -50 o F (-46 o C)  Sky is black
