9 Page Continuity: Master Pages

Chapter 9 Objectives Create multiple master pages. Set up automatic page numbering, jump lines, and continuation lines. Insert, duplicate, and remove pages. Create an object library. Manage document pages using the Pages panel. Create and apply object styles.

Keyboard Shortcuts Review –Strip out local formatting and replace with style –Pages panel –Paragraph styles panel –Jump from one linked text frame to another –Registration mark ®

Styles (1 of 2) Paragraph styles –Apply to an entire paragraph –(Remember, a paragraph is defined by a return) Character styles –Apply to a word or letters within a paragraph –Can be used in conjunction with a paragraph style

Styles (2 of 2) Why use styles? –They create consistency from page to page and designer to designer. –They make global text editing possible. –They save time. –They can be brought in and transferred out to other documents.

Pages Panel (F12) Master pages “global” level Document page icons in spreads Separator bar Add document page

Master Pages (1 of 2) Master page elements cannot be changed on the document level unless you do an override: –Shift+Cmd+Click (Mac) –Shift+Ctrl+Click (Windows) You can select items on the master page and disallow document level overrides. If you detach a selection from its master page, future master page changes will not apply.

Master Pages (2 of 2) Automatic page numbering is specified on the master page level. Master pages can be duplicated, edited, and deleted. Be careful using the “based on” option when creating new master pages.

Why use master pages? They create consistency from page to page and designer to designer. They make sure all repeating elements are in the correct location. They save time. They can be duplicated and transferred to other documents.

Object Styles Create consistency in the same manner as paragraph and character styles. Can be set up, applied, and changed globally. Can incorporate effects and paragraph styles. As you work through the chapter, you will create master pages/object libraries for one project, and object styles for another. Don’t skip these sections!

Summary Master pages bring continuity to a document. Override master page elements before editing on the document level. Detach an object on the document level to remove it from the master page’s power. Create and label library entries to keep client accounts organized. Use object styles to make it easy to change attributes throughout a document.
