A look at the Precambrian Era  This period was from about 4.6 billion years until 570 million years ago.  During this period there were a lot of stromatolites.  Also during this period there was Hakatai Scale and Bass limestone which are rocks.

Paleozoic Era  The Tonto group is the lowest group in the Grand Canyon and has many complex fossils. As a matter of fact there have been 47 different species that have been found and reported.  Bedding planes also contain burrows and trace fossils also found in this layer. Most of these look like traces we may find in the ocean.

Break down In the traces and fossils found in the canyon we are able to distinguish the difference in the different periods of the canyon. There have been many fossils found and then further investigated to help figure out how old they are and in what period were they alive.

Mesozoic  During this period Pangaea broke up forming land lifts and earth quakes.  The rocks that were left from all this have eroded away to nothing, this has stripped the canyon back to the Permian layers of rock

Cenozoic  Fossils with vertebrates are being found in the lower beds of this layer that are exposed.  Earlier deposits are being eroded down to hard pre-Cenozoic pavements.  Some of the best mammal producing beds are considered to be found here.

Personal Thoughts  I really think that it is a tragedy that some of the rocks have eroded away and that we will never be able to completely figure all this out. However, I do think it is fascinating that we are able to find all of the fossils that were mentioned in slide 4.

Summary  The few rivers that go through the Grand Canyon have started to erode the rocks and sediments found in the national park. This all started about 6 million years ago. Although some rocks are missing we are still able to find traces and fossils of animals. This helps us greatly in the understanding of the Earth and how it formed.

 Pangaea- earliest known formation of the earth’s continents.  Tonto group- consists of 3 Cambrian period formations, the Tapeats Sandstone, Bright Angle Shale, and the Muay limestone.
