Student Support Services Tri-County Technical College Creating Resumes That Work Developed by Herm Allen Designed by Alex Wilson

Know the Purpose of a Resume  To obtain an interview, NOT a job!  To give potential employers a positive first impression.  A vehicle to relate skills, achievements, qualifications, personal qualities, and interests to the position.

What Recruiters Look For in a Resume  An objective on the resume or in the cover letter  Good grammar and spelling  Bulleted information rather than paragraph form.  Experience and /or skills  Well-organized

Resume Construction Gathering Raw Materials  Inventory all skills, accomplishments, work experience, internships, volunteer work, coursework, etc.  Pull out or identify the most valuable on the list as it relates directly or indirectly to the desired position or career.

Develop Foundation (Objective)  Position Focused - A position as a Computer programmer.  Field Focused - A position in the field of computer technology.  Skills Focused - A position where I can utilize my problem solving and analytical skills.

Choosing A Design (Format)  Chronological -work experience -emphasizes continuity -effective for those who have little work experience  Functional/ Analytical -emphasis is on skills (transferable) or job functions -highlights major areas of accomplishment and strength -effective for those who lack direct job-related experience

Examples of Resume Designs Chronological Functional/Analytical

Resume Do’s & Don’t’s  Do’s -use 8 ½ x 11 paper -use white, cream, beige (neutral colors) with black, clear print -print only on one side of paper -save on a computer disk  Don'ts -have typographical errors or misspelled words -send without a cover letter -use personal pronouns -include every school attended, only those from which you have received a degree/ diploma
