Quote by Mr. Cecil Rhodes  “I contend that we British are the finest race in the world, and the more of the world we inhabit, the better it is for the human race…. It is our duty to seize every opportunity of acquiring more territory and we should keep this one idea steadily before our eyes that more territory simply means more of the Anglo-Saxon race, more of the best, the most human, most honorable race the world possesses.”

Two Types of Imperial Rule  Direct Rule – European power gets directly involved in running the colony.  Indirect Rule – European power allows local rulers to rule their own people but must follow European law.

 What helped the Europeans conquer territories?

Technology  Maxim Gun (machine gun) and new weapons  Steam Engine – could travel upstream  Railroads/Cables – communication  New treatments for malaria – Europeans now could move deeper into Africa
