BuggingOut!BuggingOut! BuggingOut!BuggingOut! Science, Mrs. Snyder

Scientists classify animals They are grouped to make it easier for scientists to study them. There are two main groups of animals: –Those with a backbone inside their bodies. Vertebrates –Those with a backbone outside their bodies. Invertebrates Which group do you belong to?

Shared Characteristics Organisms in the same group have similar characteristics We are going to focus on insects. All insects have a few similar characteristics.few similar characteristics They have an exoskeleton. Here is a picture of a cicada’s exoskeleton. cicada’s exoskeleton They have three main parts to their bodies: a head, a thorax, and an abdomen.three main parts They have one pair of antennae on top of their heads. They have two pair of wings.one pair of antennae They have three pair of legs.

Two pair of wings Insects, like this dragonfly, have two pair of wings. Their wings are symmetrical.

Three pair of legs To be an classified as an insect, an organism must have THREE pair of legs. These legs are symmetrical.

Other characteristics Usually, they are small in size. Insects, like all animals, move. –They jump, fly, or walk. They cannot produce their own food by means of photosynthesis, but are consumers. They also need water and air to live.

Quiz! 1.Is this an insect? Explain why or why not.

Quiz, continued 2.Is this an insect? Why or why not?

Only one more after this one! 3.What about this example, or specimen?

The last question! 4.What about this specimen? Explain why or why not. Use the characteristics to explain your answer.
