Presentation transcript:

 Draw two circles label one the United States and the other Canada (example on the chalk board)  Write words that suggest ways in which Canada and the United States are alike and different

 Physical Features:  Canada extends farther north. Atlantic Ocean is on the east of Canada and the United States. Pacific Ocean is on the West of Canada and the United States.  Continental divide- is the boundary that separates rivers flowing toward opposite sides of a continent. ◦ Example the Rocky mountains separate the rivers that flow west from the rivers that flow east.

 Another example is a divide also separates one drainage basin from another.  Drainage basin- the entire area of land that is drained by a major river and its tributaries.  Tributaries- rivers and streams that carry water to a major river. ◦ Example The Mississippi River and its tributaries drain the larges area in the US into the Gulf of Mexico.

 Rocky Mountains are a cordillera  Cordillera- related set of mountain ranges ◦ Rocky Mountains stretch from Northern Alaska to Mexico making it the longest mountain chain in North America. ◦ Appalachian Mountains were formed by tectonic forces. The peaks have been worn down by rain, ice and wind. ◦ What Mountain rage is older the Rocky or Appalachian?

 The United States plains region is divided into the Great Plains and the Central Plains. The Great Plains have the highest elevation.

 People & Cultures: ◦ Canada and the United States have long life expectancies, high per capita incomes and high literacy rates. ◦ Literacy- abilities to read and write. ◦ Standard of living- living is a measurement of person’s or group’s education, housing, health care and nutrition.

 Climate & Vegetation: ◦ Canada and the United States have similar landform patterns, but differ in climate. ◦ Temperate grasslands provide good farmland. ◦ The temperate grassland is called a prairie. ◦ Prairie- characterized by a great variety of grasses. ◦ Southwest US has a hot, dry climate receiving less than 10 inches of rainfall each year. ◦ Lack of water keeps population relatively low ◦ Land is suited to raise cattle and sheep on ranches.

 Climate & Vegetation: ◦ The region supports desert scrub, and chaparral and coniferous forest. (southwestern US) ◦ Short growing season and permafrost make up the Arctic tundra. ◦ Only plants that grow in this area are lichens, mosses and tiny plants. ◦ Tundra region is located in the northern parts of Canada and the United States.
