Soils: One of Our Natural Resources!
Some call it dirt…..But it is Soil !!! Soil is made of loose, broken down rock and organic material.
Quick review: what is in soil? Soil life like bacteria, earthworms, and moles as well as air and water.
Did you know? It takes hundreds sometimes thousands of years to form one inch of soil from the rock below.
Only the top few centimeters of soil are good for growing plants.
This is why why we have to take care of our soil! Soil conservation Soil conservation is important!
What would happen to land based life as we know it, if there was no soil layer?
World soil conditions Soils are becoming degraded in many regions. Figure 8.1a
Causes of soil degradation Most soil degradation is caused by: – livestock overgrazing – deforestation – erosion on cropland agriculture – soil pollution Figure 8.2
Soil erosion
What if soil is lost? Land can turn into a desert, nothing can grow and there can be famine
What can be done? Soil conservation – preventing soil loss How – use less machinery on the soil, less fertilizer, etc.
