Ometepe comes from the Nahuatl words Ome – Two & Tepetl – Mountain Two mountains It is formed by two rising volcanoes named, Maderas & Concepción The island also had an hourglass figure

Isla De Ometepe became inhabited in BC, by Nahua indians from Mexico In the 16 th century when Spaniards conquered Central America, they also conquered Isla De Ometepe Pirates came snooping around, stealing their women, money, belongings, ect. Spaniards chased them away, but it is now located in present day Republic of Nicaragua in the middle of Lake Nicaragua It has over 35,000 inhabitants, most are farmers, and their Major crop is Plantains

Concepción, one of the volcanoes, is cone shaped, and is still considered an active volcano as of It rose in the early Holocene Era. Reaches an altitude of 1610 meters. On December 8 th, 1880, the volcano ‘came back to life’, because for a while there, it had a long and quiet period. Maderas, the other volcano is located in the southeast part of the island, and is considered extinct or dormant. It also rose in the early Holocene Era. Reaches an altitude of 1314 meters. It has a crater lake and supports a rainforrest environment.

Due to the volcanic ash, the soil is very fertile. A lot of farming is done on this island. The island also contained artifacts from the Mesoamerican Postclassic period, such as different types of ceramics and Petroglyphs on large boulders. The Mesoamerica period included several Hispanic countries during the 15 th & 16 th centuries. When the Olmec, Mayan, Aztecs lived.

Isla De Ometepe has a variety of wildlife. Such as different primates, White-headed Capuchin, Mantled Howler monkey, Spider monkeys. The Ometepe Biological Field School is set up to study and protect these animals. One of the aquatic species is the freshwater Nicaragua shark.
