Heritage Minutes By: Kristin Stremlaw

Superman In Cleveland, Ohio 1931, 17 year old Toronto-born cartoonist, Joe Schuster and his buddy Jerry Siegel came up with the brilliant idea of a comic book series about “strange visitor from another planet with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men." Their dream soon became reality. The comic book series “Superman” became such a hit that it was transfromed into a television series. “Superman” went on to make many movies, and to this day is well known and reckognized across the globe all thanks to the brilliant ideas of 17 year old Toronto-born cartoonist, Joe Schuster and his buddy Jerry Siegel.

Winnie In London, England 1915, Captain Harry Colebourn, an army veterinary surgeon in the Canadian military was sent to the front in France. Unable to take his bear, Winnipeg (a.k.a: Winnie), along with him, he donated her to the London zoo. Later on, a boy named Christopher Robin and his father were wandering the zoo when they came across Winnie. Christopher Robin was captivated by the bear and begged his father to take him home. Unable to take the bear home, his father had a man incorporate Winnie and Christopher Robin into the hero of a classic childhood story. They got the name 'Winnie-the-Pooh' by mixing the name of Christopher's pet swan, and the bear. The story became a classic, and is still extremely popular today.

Vimy Ridge One of the greatest battles in Canadian history was the battle at Vimy Ridge. It started on April, 1917 and was considered the turning point of WWI. The goal of the battle at Vimy Ridge was to break through the impenetrable German lines. It was the first time the Canadians fought together, and they succeeded greatly, driving the German's off the ridge. Although it was a major victory, it did not come without a cost. 10, 602 soldiers fought the battle at Vimy Ridge, and 3,598 were killed. During this single battle, four Canadians were awarded the Victoria Cross and the entire Canadian contingent was commended for their bravery.

The End! Thanks for watching!
