ADJECTIVES - DEFINITION Words that tell which one, what kind, or how many are called adjectives. An adjective is a word used to describe a noun or pronoun.
ADJECTIVES TELL WHICH ONE
The third boy in line fell down. “Boy” is a noun. What word tells which boy? third “Third” is an adjective.
John came in second place. “Place” is a noun. What word tells which place? second “Second” is an adjective.
ADJECTIVES TELL WHAT KIND
I like sour pickles. “Pickles” is a noun. Which word tells what kind of pickles? sour “Sour” is an adjective.
The red car sped past us. “Car” is a noun. What word tells what kind of car? red “Red” is an adjective.

Twelve girls came to the party. “Girls” is the noun. Which word tells how many girls? twelve “Twelve” is an adjective.
We saw three dolphins in the ocean. The word “dolphins” is the noun. Which word tells how many dolphins? three “Three” is an adjective.
