Aim: How does Earth’s atmosphere heat up? Do Now: Have ESRT on desk, please! 1. Which color on the Electromagnetic spectrum has the longest wavelength? 2. Which portion of the Electromagnetic spectrum can we see? 3. Which wavelength has the strongest, fastest, and highest frequency? 4. How do transverse waves travel?

What is the Law of Conservation of Energy? Energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only be transformed from one state to another. Burning candle: chemical – heat – light energy. Toaster: electric – heat energy.

When Earth receives heat energy there are three ways heat is transferred:

CONVECTION The movement of molecules in fluids. Ex: Gases and Liquids. Warm molecules rise because they are less dense and cool. Cooled molecules sink because they are more dense and become warm. All driven by DENSITY! EX: Atmosphere, hydrosphere. TRICK: conVection = moVement

Conduction Passing or transferring energy from molecule to molecule through contact. Travels from a high energy source to a low energy sink. Most effective in solids. TRICK: CONduction = CONtact

RADIATION Electromagnetic waves that travel through space. Since the sun is our primary heat source; think radiator! No medium is needed. Meaning: it can travel through empty space. Or through a glass window.

What happens to energy when it is absorbed into matter?  When energy is absorbed through matter; solid, liquid, or gas, the energy slows down.  When energy slows; it becomes a different wavelength.

See all three here:

Try sample regent questions:  1. Differences in density cause energy to be transferred by which method?  A. AbsorptionB. Conduction C. ConvectionD. Radiation  2. What method of energy transfer requires no medium for transfer?  A. ConductionB. ConvectionC. RefractionD. Radiation
