MathMath Add Integers

What Are You Learning? I CAN add integers.

Why Do You Need To Know This? Adding integers is useful because it helps in solving real world problems.

Vocabulary What are opposites? Two integers that are opposites are also called additive inverses. The sum of any number and its additive inverse or opposite is zero.

Adding Integers Same Sign The sum of two positive integers is positive. The sum of two negative integers is negative. Ex: =43 Ex: (-31) = -43

Complete the following problems. a.-3 + (-2) b c (-16)

(-12)

Complete the following problems. a b (-49)

Vocabulary Zero pair—A positive number that is paired with a negative number. When you add them together, they equal zero.

Example Use counters to represent 5 + (-3). □□□□□ + ■■■ Group and remove the zero pairs. □□□□□ ■■■ Count the tiles you have left. □□5 + (-3) = 2

Example Use tiles to find 2 + (-5) □□ + ■■■■■ Group and remove the zero pairs. □□ ■■■■■ Count the tiles you have left. ■■■ (-5) = -3

Complete the following problems. a b c d.8 + (-3) e.3 + (-6)

Adding Integers Different Signs To add integers with different signs, subtract their absolute values and take the sign of the larger number. Ex: 7 + (-18) = -11

Integer Song Sing to the tune of “Row, Row, Row, Your Boat” “Same sign, add and keep, Different sign subtract. Take the sign of the higher number, Then you’ll be exact.”

Complete the following problems. a.7 + (-1) b c.10 + (-12)

(-7)

(-22)

Complete the following problems. a b

(-34)

Complete the following problems. a b.7 + (-3) c.-2 + (-2) d.(-7) + (-3) e.2 + (-6) f g.-5 + (-1) h.On two plays, a football team loses 8 yards and then gains 3 yards.

Homework Write the following assignment in your agenda!! Sheet E-59
