The Old North Church

The Old North Church is also known as Christ Church. It was completed in 1723 and is the oldest active church in the city of Boston.

The church was the location of the famous “one if by land and two if by sea” signal that took place on April 18, That same night Paul Revere told the church sexton, Robert Newman, to hang two lanterns in the steeple to indicate that the British were coming by sea.

The Old North Church was the Highest building in Boston in 1775 and could be seen from across the harbor.

In colonial Boston the church belonged to the King and had strong ties with England. Most of the congregation at that time was loyal to England.

The oldest bells in America are at The Old North Church. The bells were made in England and were the first bells brought to America and hung in the church. Paul Revere was a bell ringer as a boy. The bells have been restored twice since they were hung. The bells are active and still ringing today.
