Jason Hansen CIS 1020 Final Project

 There has been a lot of debate on if a sequel should be commissioned for the Friday the 13 th remake.  We will be looking at different financial aspects of the Friday the 13 th series.  We will also look at the financials of other horror movie remakes and their sequels.  By the end of this presentation we should be able to answer this question.

 First we will analyze the Friday the 13 th series by individual film as well as the franchise.  We will call out each films estimated budget  What each film made at the US box office  This will account for total domestic gross  This will not include foreign gross or home video  Then we will show what the gross profit was after taking out the budget of the film

Friday the 13th Series Overall Box office FilmBudget (Estimate)USA Total GrossGross Profit Friday the 13th (1980)$550,000$39,754,601$39,204,601 Friday the 13th Part 2$1,250,000$21,722,776$20,472,776 Friday the 13th Part 3$4,000,000$36,690,067$32,690,067 Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter$,800,000$32,980,880$31,180,880 Friday the 13th: A New Beginning$2,200,000$21,930,418$19,730,418 Jason Lives: Friday the 13th part VI$3,000,000$19,472,057$16,472,057 Friday the 13th Part 7: The New Blood$2,800,000$19,170,001$16,370,001 Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan$5,000,000$14,343,976$9,343,976 Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday$2,500,000$15,935,068$13,435,068 Jason X$11,000,000$13,121,555$2,121,555 Freddy Vs. Jason$25,000,000$86,622,655$61,622,655 Friday the 13th (2009)$19,000,000$65,002,019$46,002,019 Totals$78,100,000$386,746,073$308,646,073

 It is interesting to note that all 3 of the sequels to the remakes made about 50% less at the US Box Office then the remakes made.

 Fans are actively talking about a sequel and it’s been almost two years since the remake was released!

 Friday the 13 th finished as the 18 th highest grossing film of 1980  With regard to the domestic box office gross, the film would have made $117,917,391 in adjusted 2009 dollars

 The film currently sits in 5 th place for all-time President’s Day Weekends with $45,033,454  It’s currently the 18 th highest opening for an R-rated film in US history  It’s the 15 th highest grossing film of 2009

 Adjusting for the 2010 inflation, Friday the 13 th is the highest grossing horror franchise in the United States with approximately $617.5 million.

 Every Friday the 13 th film released was profitable after it’s initial US theatrical run.  Of the horror remakes and sequels viewed, they have all had profitable runs.  Even considering the drop the sequels had from the remake, they were all turning a profit.  Based on the results I have been able to find, I feel it would be warranted for the film studio to commission another Friday the 13 th film!

 Estimated Budgets   Domestic Grosses   Fun Facts 
