Welcome to Reception Reading Meeting 2015

Why Teach Phonics? The phonics system teaches children to read quickly and skillfully Recognising individual letters Recognising different combinations of letters to form a sound and blending them together

Learning to Read Taught daily until the end of year 2 in 6 different phases Letters and sounds document sets out the order of teaching As well as how the sounds must be pronounced (video clip) There are many things that children must learn before they are ready to read. Phase 1 Lots and lots of speaking! Rhyming Learning what sounds right! ‘reading a picture’ – inference Blending Segmenting

Spelling Rules Many different ways to form the same sound! b ai t w eigh t p l ay The same spelling can make the same sound! c ow b l ow b oo k c oo l You can begin to see how learning the sounds helps to make sense with reading and writing

Word Recognition Alongside teaching phonemes we also teach a range of key words. Some words are not phonetic and cannot be sounded out. These are known as Tricky Words Always try to use new words (tricky or not) in a sentence
