Why respiratory – the human burden Respiratory disease is one of the five big killers in England 6 million people in England suffer from COPD or Asthma Every year around 100,000 patients get admitted as COPD admissions There is significant variation in outcomes across England – a four fold variation in admissions, a two fold variation in mortality. Only 50% of patients are managed by a respiratory clinician 4NHS | Airway-ICP Launch | 17 Feb 2014

Why respiratory – the burden on system The NHS spends around £2bn a year on respiratory disease. 24 million working days are lost each year due to COPD £3.8 billion lost due to reduced productivity due to COPD 5NHS | Airway-ICP Launch | 17 Feb 2014

ICP Airways and NHS England Partnership to support mutual growth The aim of AIRWAYS-ICPs is to develop multi- sectorial integrated care pathways for chronic respiratory diseases which can be used across European countries and regions Priority areas to tackle through ICP Airways programme for NHS England: prevention and health Tackle CRDs across the life cycle Multi-sectoral working 12NHS | Airway-ICP Launch | 17 Feb 2014

NHS | Primary care Transformation | 12 September Thank you The essence of clinical leadership is to motivate, to inspire, to promote the values of the NHS, to empower and to create a consistent focus on the needs of the patients being served. Leadership is necessary not just to maintain high standards of care but to transform services to achieve even higher levels of excellence. Inspiring Leaders: Leadership for Quality (Department of Health 2009)
