Fish, Floods, and Ecosystem Engineers: Aquatic Conservation in the Okavango Delta, Botswana by Ketlhatlogile Mosepele, Peter B. Moyle, Glenn S. Merron, David R. Purkey, and Belda Mosepele

Okavango Delta Hydrology One of the largest inland water systems of the world spanning 12,000 km² when flooded and 9,000 km² during the dry season. Fed by the Okavango River near the northern border of Botswana. 55 cm/year enter the Delta from the river and an average of 49 cm/year is from precipitation. There is an average of 1 cm/year that exits the delta to the Maun River on the southern edge of the Delta. The rest of the water loss is due to evapotranspiration. Rainy season (December-March) is in Angola (the area north of Botswana and feeds into the Okavango River further south). The floodwaters of Angola then flow south (March- May) and continue to filter into the wetland swamps of the Delta (July-September). The river inflow slows and evapotranspiration rises with the approach of summer.
