Decade of Action on Road Safety

Purpose of the presentation The objective of this presentation is to highlight the Africa’s readiness & Preparations for UN Decade of Action on Road Safety. Encourage Countries to fully participate in the Decade. Discuss the Launch in May 2011

The UN General Assembly in New York voted unanimously on 2 nd March for the Decade of Action.

What is the UN Decade of Action “Stabilize and then reduce the level of road fatalities’ which approximately requires a 50% reduction in the forecast level of fatalities by If reached this would avoid 5 million deaths and 50 million injuries saving over $3 trillion”.

Is Africa prepared for the Decade of Action? What preparations are being made in Africa? UNECA has developed an African Road Safety Decade of Action Plan Various efforts being made in the RECs for the respective launches. ANSRA WARSO Some Countries have launched the Decade Uganda

What actions ought to be Done Demonstrate measurable success in achieving a 50% reduction in the forecast level of fatalities by 2020 Encourage countries to implement the recommendations of the World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention Set interim targets that will contribute to the overall fatality reduction goal

What actions ought to be Done...2 Raise professional capacity in road injury prevention in Africa Ensure that road safety management and reducing injury levels becomes self- sustaining over the long term Provide a common framework for action shared by countries, bilateral and multilateral donors, NGO’s, civil society etc.
