Determinants of health in conflict and fragile states Combining CE-DAT data with spatial datasets

CE-DAT: no straightforward analysis Aggregation of CE-DAT values (such as extrapolation from surveyed area to higher administrative levels) is problematic: CE-DAT coverage is likely to be biased towards populated areas, conflict affected areas, easily accessible areas etc. Also, values show high dispersion. South Sudan: Vaccination coverage (MCV)

Northern Bahr El Ghazal CE-DAT: no straightforward analysis Even for primary administrative units (such as states or provinces), aggregation is difficult because dispersion remains high and for many of them, the number of reported surveys is too low. South Sudan: Vaccination coverage (MCV)

Upper Nile CE-DAT: no straightforward analysis Even for primary administrative units (such as states or provinces), aggregation is difficult because dispersion remains high and for many of them, the number of reported surveys is too low. South Sudan: Vaccination coverage (MCV)

Unity CE-DAT: no straightforward analysis Even for primary administrative units (such as states or provinces), aggregation is difficult because dispersion remains high and for many of them, the number of reported surveys is too low. South Sudan: Vaccination coverage (MCV)

Jonglei CE-DAT: no straightforward analysis Even for primary administrative units (such as states or provinces), aggregation is difficult because dispersion remains high and for many of them, the number of reported surveys is too low. South Sudan: Vaccination coverage (MCV)

We are trying to… …efficiently exploit spatial information that is reported in CE-DAT (geo precision goes down to tertiary administrative units such as health districts) …analyze demographic, geographic and historical characteristics of survey sites: population density (AfriPop), access to roads, distance to state capitals (both UN), health facilities (WHO), recent conflict events (ACLED) …Test for determinants of key health indicators: Are health indicators correlated with population density (AfriPop)? With recent conflict events (ACLED)? Do time trends differ between urban and rural areas? …
