Vocabulary Screening
Overview Assesses knowledge of the meaning of grade level words read silently. Student is given 3 answer choices and chooses a synonym for each target word. 30 items for each grade level May be group or individually administered Untimed
Rationale
Vocabulary is highly correlated with comprehension. It is essential for understanding and is also necessary for writing Students who can decode well do not always understand what they read because they lack vocabulary and background knowledge.
Preparing
You will need: Copies of Form A on students’ grade level (use grade 8 for high school students) Pencils for student use An environment conducive to testing
Take a few moments to look closely at the appropriate forms and corresponding scoring keys for this assessment.
Administering
Distribute copies to students. Have student write name & date on page. Follow script in italics. Give students minutes, adding time if needed.
Scoring
Use appropriate scoring key. (found after Forms A and B for each grade Record # Correct on student page. Calculate % Correct by dividing # Correct by 30.
