History of Chess The origins of chess are not exactly clear, though most believe it evolved from earlier chess-like games played in India almost two thousand years ago. The game of chess we know today has been around since the 15th century where it became popular in Europe.

The Lineup…the soldiers King (1) Total of 16 pieces per side Queen (1) Bishop (2) Knight (2) Rook (2) Pawn (8)

The Board and 8 squares down. Total # of squares: 64 The chess board is a grid of 8 squares across and 8 squares down. Total # of squares: 64 Rows are labeled 1 through 8. Columns are labeled “a” through “h”

Squares can be identified like the game Battleship Squares can be identified like the game Battleship. “a1” is the lower left square, “h8” is the upper right square The board is aligned so that the square in the bottom right corner is always white. Remember: “White on the Right!"

This is what the Chess board looks like before starting the game.

The King The King moves one square in any direction.

Queen The Queen in a diagonal line or a straight line in any direction.

The Rook The Rook moves in straight lines, either horizontally or vertically, and forwards or backwards, but cannot jump over pieces.

The Bishop The Bishop moves in a diagonal line in any direction – forwards or backwards. It cannot jump pieces.

The Knight The Knight moves like an “L” or a “7”. It jumps over pieces that are in its course of movement.

The Pawn The Pawn moves differently depending on what it wants to do. When located on it's original square, the Pawn may move one or two squares forward.

When located on a non-original square, the Pawn may move just one square forward. It may never move backwards or sideways.

How do you score a victory? The object of the game is to capture the opposing King by trapping it into a dead-end scenario where the king can no longer move to a safe space on the board. If the King is trapped in a dead-end scenario, the opposing player says, “Checkmate” signaling the game is over. A player must warn their opponent that they are one move away from a possible checkmate by saying “Check” meaning, you MUST do something to protect the King.

Although the pieces do have a point value, you do not win the game by scoring points.

CHECK There are 3 ways to respond when in ‘check’: * Move the king to a safe square. (Defensive) * Capture the attacking piece. * Move a piece in the way to ‘block’ the ‘check’. You must always keep your King out of “danger’s way.”

White moves Bishop to B5…putting Black in ‘Check’.

Black’s move. How can Black put White in Check?

Black to move: Put White in Check

Black just moved. What must they say?

White’s move: Rook to a8
