Tree-huggers and Terrorism What makes a protest a protest? Please get your notebook and something to write with. (Note: for this assignment it is VERY important that your Table of Contents and page numbers are correct.)

You are going to watch a protest that took place in 1997 in Eugene, Oregon. Quickly draw the chart on the front of page 15. What was important to the protestersWhat was important to the police

On page 16…. 1.What forms of protest did you observe in the clip? 2.What do you think was important to the activists during this protest? 3.What do you think was important to the government/police? 4.What did activists do to escalate the conflict? 5.How might these actions affect future protests by environmental activists? 6.Which “side” do you agree with more? Explain. 7.In your opinion, what are some other ways that this situation could have been resolved?

Please copy the following onto page 17 The ELF or (Earth Liberation Front) began using arson as a form of protest. First they burned down a ranger station to protest the fact that the US Forest Service was allowing timber companies to cut down trees for profit in national forests. This arson attracted more environmental activists willing to commit crimes of protest, and the group went on to perform other similar actions. What reasons did the ELF give to justify their crimes?

On page 18….. 1.What kind of companies did the ELF target? 2.If you owned a business, would it be acceptable for others to burn down your business because they did not like what it did? Explain. 3.Why did the ELF think that its crimes of arson were justified? 4.Do you believe that property damage such as arson is an acceptable form of protest? Why or why not?

On one sheet of paper per group… Within your group, write about a community event, policy, or practice that you find objectionable. Outline what you believe to be the best way to voice opposition to it. Explain why your approach would be the most effective approach. Make sure everyone’s name is on it and turn it into the bin by the bell!

Were the ELF arsons acts of terrorism? Claim: Evidence: Elaboration: Counter-Claim: Elaboration: Rebuttal: Final thoughts on issue and importance:
