Social Perception Respond to others based on our perceptions 1 st impressions of others – Baby-faced – what traits are inferred from this? Priming is powerful – Photos of ambiguous (unclear) expressions Interpretations? Fear? Happiness?

Power of Beliefs Belief Perseverance – beliefs persist in spite of disconfirming evidence – Why? – Influence of Confirmation Bias? – What type of evidence will convince us?

Example: – “On Being Sane in Insane Places” (1973) Rosenhan experiment on validity of psychiatric diagnoses What did he do? Results? – Remedy for belief perseverance?

Intuition & Judging Others Our thinking is partly controlled & partly automatic Facial recognition – controlled or automatic? – Evolutionary benefit? – Types of faces? – What is “attentional blink”?
