EPA Region 10 STORET GIS Layer Creation Why STORET for Region 10?

Bunker Hill Mining and Metallurgical Superfund Site

 Listed as a Superfund site in 1983  The Coeur d'Alene Basin and downgradient Spokane River are severely impacted by over 100 years of mining activities.  Significant measurable risks exist to:  Humans (e.g., children with blood lead levels above national CDC standards) – some of the highest human blood lead levels measured here  The environment (e.g., major tributaries devoid of aquatic life, yearly die-off of migrating waterfowl).  Collaborative process involving 2 states, 2 tribes, USFWS, USGS, BLM, communities and citizens  One of the largest Superfund sites and very controversial with substantial community interest Site Overview Tundra Swans

1. Over 5000 historical station locations and over 600,000 analyses to manage 2. Sampling will continue for the next 30+ years - sampling by numerous entities 3. EPA Contractor Issues – periodic change in Superfund contractors associated with significant data management costs for data migration and maintenance 4. Data access and tools for stakeholders/community to view data are limited Data Issues – Data Problems

STORET Provides the Answers through Collaboration 1. Over 5000 historical station locations and over 600,000 analyses to manage  Historical data was migrated into STORET Summer 2004 – (URS, Regions 8 and 10, Gold Systems, HQ) 2. Sampling will continue for the next 30+ years - sampling by numerous entities  Web Simm interface is under development, data submitters will provide an electronic data deliverable that is acceptable for STORET upload (URS, Regions 8 and 10, Gold Systems, HQ) 3. EPA Contractor Issues – periodic change in Superfund contractors associated with significant data management costs for data migration and maintenance.  STORET is the new data repository for the historical Superfund site data

4. Data access and tools for stakeholders/community to view data are limited  Creation of a National STORET GIS Layer for use in mapping (Region10, HQ)  (URS and Region 10)  Bunker Hill Mining and Metallurgical Complex Internet Mapping Application  Mapping STORET results – a mapping application that displays analytical results (Regions 8, 10, HQ)  Reporting and graphing tools (URS and Region 10)  Region 8 STORET Internet Mapping Application (Region10)

 Supply Latitude and Longitude - Measure the location of stations using GPS. Over 1100 stations were removed from the STORET Mapping Layer because “0,0” were supplied for the Lat, Long fields.  Datum - Providing “unknown” or “other” as entry to the horizontal_datum field causes accuracy problems when mapping station locations so choose a horizontal datum for your data. Creation of a National STORET GIS Layer 2 Simple Suggestions for Accurate Mapping of STORET Stations

 Supply Units of Measure  Supply Analytical Method  Don’t Use Special Characters in Text Fields - Any embedded quotes, &#%+ or other special characters – they create problems when trying to process data Analytic Results on a Map or in a Report 3 Simple Suggestions for data input
