  Question? Alternative Beta version HEAT ENERGY PART 1: CONDUCTION

  Question? Alternative Beta version What is energy? If something has energy it means it can do some work. Some types of energy: Stored (or potential) energy - Chemically: stick of explosive, coal, rocket fuel - Due to position (e.g. something high can fall) Kinetic energy (moving) Thermal energy (due to heat)

  Beta version Which has lowest energy? 100 litres of water on a mountain 100 litres of water in a waterfall 100 litres of water in a duck pond 100 litres of petrol

  Beta version Where might you find more thermal energy? North Sea Moon North Pole Volcano

  Beta version Which gives out more thermal energy? Candle Forest Fire Sun A firework

  Beta version BONUS ROUND: Pick your lucky colour!

  Beta version Debate: It’s better to have too much thermal energy than too little YES – better to have too much NO – better to have too little

  Beta version In a solid (only!!) the particles are held together by strong forces of attraction. The only way in which the particles can move is to vibrate forwards and backwards. In metals the process is fast, they are good conductors. In non-metals the process is slow. It takes a long time for the particles to pass on their heat. Non-metals are not good conductors. They are good insulators HEAT TRANSFER by CONDUCTION

  Beta version Which type of burn is due to conduction? Sunburn Getting burnt by a hot dinner plate Burnt in a bath that’s too hot Acid burn

  Beta version Conduction of thermal energy is due to particles moving. They have Kinetic energy Stored energy Potential energy No energy

  Beta version BONUS ROUND: Pick your lucky colour!

  Beta version It’s good to have fibreglass in your roof because it: Has a lot of thermal energy Has very little thermal energy Is a good conductor Is a bad conductor

  Beta version

  Beta version A metal saucepan is good for cooking because it Has a lot of thermal energy Has very little thermal energy Is a good conductor Is a bad conductor

  Beta version

  Beta version Which piece of clothing is a better heat insulator? Swimming trunks Winter Coat Rain Coat T-shirt

  Beta version Which atoms are vibrating more?

  Beta version
