RTII Defined: WASD Oct. 2014

RTII is…all about instruction A PROCESS/FRAMEWORK to ensure Instruction and intervention are match to student needs and A PROCESS/FRAMEWORK used to inform instructional decisions WASD Oct. 2014

Process: WASD Oct RTII

RtII – Steps for Implementation: 1. Monitor Student Progress within the core areas 2. Identify the student’s need for academic help – enrichment or support 3. Develop strategies to assist the student 4. Implement intervention strategies and monitor progress WASD Oct. 2014

RTII Framework: WASD Oct. 2014

Intervention Levels Tiers include increasing levels of intensity of interventions ◦Primary Instruction -- differentiated curriculum and instruction for all students (80%) ◦Secondary Interventions -- Targeted interventions for students (5-15%) ◦Tertiary Interventions -- Strategic and Intense interventions for students (1-5%) WASD Oct. 2014

Primary Instruction – Tier 1 Expectation = 80% or more of students successful with general education curriculum and instruction Assessment = Universal screenings for academics and social/emotional growth (behaviors) Intervention = Through differentiated instructional practices Roles and responsibilities = primarily the general education teacher WASD Oct. 2014

Differentiated Instruction Meeting diverse needs of diverse student population Differentiating based on content and student strengths and needs Choosing curriculum components to differentiate ◦Within the core curriculum ◦Consistent with state learning standards WASD Oct. 2014

Secondary Intervention – Tier 2 Expectation = up to 15% of students may be in need of targeted interventions Assessment = progress monitoring of student response to specific intervention must occur Intervention = Research and evidence based interventions should be used Roles and responsibilities = variety of personnel as determined by student need WASD Oct. 2014

Based on data analysis ◦Universal screening: All students are screened to determine progress being made ◦Assessments – Diagnostic, Benchmark (4Sight, DIBELS, GRADE etc), Formative, and Summative ◦Utilizes classroom and specialist teachers for targeted intervention Interventions and effective instruction go hand-in-hand Targeted Intervention

Tertiary Intervention – Tier 3 Expectation = up to 5% of students may be in need of intense interventions Assessment = progress monitoring of student response to specific intervention Intervention = Research and evidence based interventions should be used; unique intervention based on teacher expertise Roles and responsibilities = variety of personnel as determined by student need WASD Oct. 2014

Why: WASD Oct RTII

Advantages of RTII Approach Provides instructional assistance in a timely fashion (not a wait-to-fail model; also identifies those who may be in need of enrichment) Helps ensure a student’s academic performance is not due to poor instruction or curriculum gaps Informs teacher and improves instruction because assessment data are collected and linked to interventions WASD Oct. 2014

Promotes shared ownership of student learning across staff and programs All staff (general, LS, Title 1, ESL, paraeducator, etc.) Active role in each level of tiered instruction WASD Oct All Staff Share All Students

Data-based and drives our instructional decisions for students across our tiers Ensure the instructional decisions are accurate: ◦Universal Screening ◦Progress Monitoring ◦Using all assessment data in a TEAM problem- solving format WASD Oct Efficient Use of Resources = Greatest Impact for All Students
