World War II The bombing of Dresden Germany

Overview of WWII The conflict began September 1, 1939 with the Invasion of Poland by Germany Germany continued to attack and conquer much of continental Europe in the upcoming years, lead by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party This war included all of the Great Powers at the time, and ended September 2, 1945 with Japan’s surrender to America.

Dresden, Germany The Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Force dropped more than 3,9000 tons of high explosive and incendiary bombs on Dresden Germany between February 13 th and 15 th 1945 This destroyed 15 square miles of the city center. This was just one of the cities that were bombed in order to weaken Naze Morale.

The U.S. Air Force reported that the bombing of Dresden was justified because: It was a military and industrial target It was a major rail transportation and communication center And housed 50,000 workers for factories that supported the Nazi war effort. However, it was argued later that Dresden was not significant center. 25,000 civilians dead. “It seems to me that the moment has come when the question of bombing of German cities simply for the sake of increasing the terror, though under other pretexts, should be reviewed. Otherwise we shall come into control of an utterly ruined land… The destruction of Dresden remains a serious query against the conduct of Allied bombing. I am of the opinion that military objectives must henceforward be more strictly studied in our own interests than that of the enemy.”- General Ismay Why?Casualties

Other works surrounding Dresden Kurt Vonnegut wrote Slaughterhouse Five based off of some of his experiences as a prisoner of war in Dresden during the bombings. "The Dresden atrocity, tremendously expensive and meticulously planned, was so meaningless, finally, that only one person on the entire planet got any benefit from it. I am that person. I wrote this book, which earned a lot of money for me and made my reputation, such as it is. One way or another, I got two or three dollars for every person killed. Some business I'm in.”- Kurt Vonnegut

It is not possible to describe! Explosion after explosion. It was beyond belief, worse than the blackest nightmare. So many people were horribly burnt and injured. It became more and more difficult to breathe. It was dark and all of us tried to leave this cellar with inconceivable panic. Dead and dying people were trampled upon, luggage was left or snatched up out of our hands by rescuers. The basket with our twins covered with wet cloths was snatched up out of my mother's hands and we were pushed upstairs by the people behind us. We saw the burning street, the falling ruins and the terrible firestorm. My mother covered us with wet blankets and coats she found in a water tub.We saw terrible things: cremated adults shrunk to the size of small children, pieces of arms and legs, dead people, whole families burnt to death, burning people ran to and fro, burnt coaches filled with civilian refugees, dead rescuers and soldiers, many were calling and looking for their children and families, and fire everywhere, everywhere fire, and all the time the hot wind of the firestorm threw people back into the burning houses they were trying to escape from.I cannot forget these terrible details. I can never forget them. -Survivor of the Dresden bombing
