The day of the art show came. Many people came to Uncle Romie’s studio to see his paintings. Everyone liked Uncle Romie’s paintings. Later that night, James dad called and told him that he got a new brother and sister. Uncle Romie and Aunt Nanette took James to the train station. He was so happy to go back home and see his parents and the new brother and sister.hee was also happy because Uncle Romi gave him a nice gift. 7

6 1 ‘’A special case for my baseball cards, and a model train for me to build’’. Said James. James and his uncle spent his birthday together. They enjoyed a baseball game, Unle Romie knew well about baseball. Aunt Nanette came home that night. She lit the candles and they all shared the birthday cake. After that,Uncle Romie had to work hard again. But at the end of each day he let James sit with him in his studio and talk. James is on a train from North Carolina to New York city to visit his Aunt Nanette and Uncle Romi. He’s a little concerned because he’s never met them before. He arrived and met his aunt Nanette. James hoped he would have fun on this summer vacation, especially since his birthday was coming up. They returned to his uncle’s home. His aunt explained that uncle Romie is a collage artist. She told James that his uncle’s working very hard, 6

25 Uncle Romie worked in his studio in the front of their apartment. That was where he kept all the things he need to make his art like paints, cloth, and newspaper. The next morning Aunt Nanette took James to see a place called Harlem, where his uncle lived as a boy. Harlem was full of people walking, working, shopping, and eating. Everybody seemed to know Aunt Nanette. James saw a painting of smaller houses, flowers, and trains.’’ it’s painting of Carolina’’. James shouted. ‘’yep,’’ Uncle Romie said. ‘’That’s the Carolina I remember’’. James and his uncle walked to the kitchen to have their breakfast. They had eggs and milk. They smeared the biscuits with jelly. They laughed and had fun. Then Uncle Romie brought out two presents from home. James opened the gifts. ‘’Mama and daddy had picked out just what I wanted.”

4 A lot of them asked after uncle Romie too. James liked Harlem and played stick ball with the kids. James was happy. Aunt Nanette took him to many places but he liked Harlem the best. On rainy days, James wrote letters to his mom and dad. He also helped Aunt Nanette to clean the house. Aunt Nanette told him that she would make his birthday party. On his birthday, she had to go out because an old aunt died “Don’t worry your Uncle will spend your birthday with you.’’ said Nanette. James knew that his birthday was ruined. Uncle Romie didn’t know about cakes or baseball games or anything except his old paintings. James went to his bed. He missed his mom and dad. The next morning James visited his uncle’s studio for the first time. It was messy. There were paints and papers all over the floors. James saw paintings of Harlem. 3
